Students are completing a paragraph about energy. Whenever they have an assessment like this I provide either a rubric or checklist with assignment criteria and marking criteria. Students should be looking at this to guide them when completing an assignment. This may also help if students are unsure of what they are supposed to be doing if they are working on it for homework.
The reading strategy that we are working on is inferring. In this activity students completed group work. We looked at an advertisement and tried to infer the meaning of it. We discovered that inferring involves looking at clues and filling in details in our heads. We need to infer in many settings including when we read, and when we read advertisements.
Students have been investigating interview techniques. First we watched a "Bill Nye interview on making his house energy efficient." We looked at the types of questions that were asked and then created our own interview questions. Stay tuned, the next step is to start interviewing people!
As part of our unit of inquiry on homes, we have been investigating and discussing the experiences of people in new homes. In this activity we read articles and discussed about the experiences of Syrian refugees who are relocating to Canada.
When writing, we work through the writing process including research (if applicable), outline, rough copy, editing, and then good copy. Students have been working on self and peer-editing their writing. In this activity students brainstormed and worked to develop a tool to help them while editing someone's writing.
Students have been exploring the ideas of the unit in English class. All students have been asking questions about Ancient Civilisations. Some students were very interested in learning more about hieroglyphics and spent a period learning about these and writing their own messages. This week we started "Guided Reading Groups" There are 4 groups in the class. I have now met with each group at least once and students are very excited about their books! While meeting with each reading groups other students are working independently. They are very much enjoying doing the "Essential English" books. Next week we will be practicing other independent centers that focus on the unit.
We have been working on adjective posters. Some of these are displayed in one of the frames above my desk. Some students were complete so instead of starting a new task they asked if they could use their understanding of verbs to make collaborative posters. This shows great creativity, collaboration and self-directing of their own learning!
