Students are learning about contractions and created quite a list of all the contractions they know!
This unit we have been inquiring into schools around the world. In English class we have created an interactive bulletin board to share this investigation with the school.
- Many teachers gave us pictures of themselves as students or themselves teaching around the world. - We then looked at the pictures and compared them to our school. We made the table with sticky notes to record this information. We were surprised to discover that many of the pictures are not from Canadian schools. We discovered more similarities then differences in the schools in the photos. - We then opened this up to be a whole school activity. The challenge was to ask yes or no questions to find out which teacher was in the photo and what country they are in. This has been a fun activity to encourage questioning and discovery! It got the whole school involved! The grade 1/2 students have been drawing visuals that they have made from our read aloud book. Students have realised that these strategies (connecting, visualising, questioning) should be used all the time whenever they are reading. These strategies help students understand the book more fully and think deeper about what they are reading.
In the IB program students are encouraged to "take action" with each unit. This can take many forms. In this example a student chose to share a poem that she had taken the initiative to write at home. She recited the poem to the class. This is an example of using what she is learning from our "How we express ourselves unit" at home.
We have been exploring books regarding communities around the world. On Friday we created a Venn diagram exploring communities in Ottawa, communities around the world and there similarities.
Today was the Rube Goldberg Fair day. Students worked extremely hard on their machines, but they also each created a "All About My Rube Goldberg Machine" book. These were also on display at the fair on Thursday.
The students are hard at work writing a book about the steps that occur in their Rube Goldberg Machine. We are trying our hardest to have these ready to display with our Rube Goldberg Machines on October 29th.
