In class we are learning that readers think while they read. We are learning many strategies to use while we read. The first strategy that all grades are working on is to make connections while they read.
I am providing this information so that you know what we are doing in class and have some ideas of additional ways to talk to your child about their reading. We are learning that their are 3 types of connections that you can make.
1) text-to-self connections - connecting what you are reading to your own life, ideas and experiences.

- Does anything in this story remind you of anything in your own life?
- I agree with/understand what I just read because in my own life...
- What does this remind you of in another text you have read?
- How are the ideas in this text similar to other texts you have read or seen?
- How is this text different from other things you have read?
- What does this remind you of in the real world?
- How are events in this story similar to things that happen in the real world?
- How are events in this story different from things that happen in the real world?
